Their interplay with the orchestra, elegantly led by Beatrice Venezi, brought out the delicate chamber-music timbres and the perfect compositional balance of this mature work by Mozart. The orchestra, sensitively conducted by Venezi, delivered a performance of the highest calibre, showcasing the ever-present solo passages for violin and viola. The transition to the music of Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951) with the Kammersymphonie No. 2, Op. 38, made a strong impression. In this piece, begun in 1906 and completed in 1939 with additions and revisions, the Austrian composer reveals himself to be more tonal and rooted in tradition. The opening atmospheres – sombre and shadowy, characteristic of Schönberg – give way to moments of light and extroversion, revealing a greater sense of positivity and a return to his roots, albeit with his unmistakable stylistic signature. Venezi’s attentive conducting successfully conveyed the nuances of the piece, eliciting an effective and well-balanced response from the orchestra.
